UPDATE: Spencer man killed in car-train crash

Posted:

SPENCER (WAOW) - The Clark County Sheriff's Department says an 81-year-old Spencer man died Tuesday when the car he was driving ran into a freight train at a rural crossing.

"There was a stop sign at the crossing," Chief Deputy Jim Backus said. "He struck the side of the train."

Charles S. Podbelsek did not stop for the sign and was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from his vehicle, Backus said.

The crash with a Canadian National Railway train happened about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday on Century Road northwest of Spencer, Backus said. No one else was hurt.

Podbelsek's 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan was thrown south of the crossing, where it landed on its roof, investigators said.
