Officials announce disaster designations for farmers in 24 Wis. counties

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -

Farmers in 24 Wisconsin counties can get financial help because of problems with the weather.

The U-S Agriculture Department this week declared natural disaster designations.

Six of those counties are located in Central Wisconsin.

Many farmers across the region are saying the same thing about this year.

"I’ve been farming 25 years and by far this is the most frustrating," said Kelly King, Farmer.

King says because of so much rain, he's one month behind with his spring planting and cutting of hay.

Federal officials add that the natural disaster designations provide a way to help farmers get through the tough spring.

Officials tell Newsline 9 with these designations the farmers who meet the certain requirements are eligible for assistance, and that includes the emergency loans.

"These loans come with low interest rates and usually short term up to seven years," said Matthew Peplinski, U.S.D.A Farm Service Agency.

Peplinski tells Newsline 9 that five years ago he was a farmer, and says this could greatly benefit farmers who qualify.

"These loans can be used to cover expenses on the farms for crop replacement, farm expenses, stuff like that,” added Peplinski.

Farmers like King in Edgar, WI say some some of his corn fields still aren't planted.

"I got some nice corn. I got some bad looking corn,” added King.

Federal officials say the natural disaster declarations should provide a boost to farmers following a spring where it was easy for them to lose confidence.

"It's good to see that our farmers are being noticed in Washington when we do have disasters," said Peplinksi.

Those 24 counties are:

Brown, Buffalo, Calumet, Chippewa, Clark, Dodge, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Kewaunee, Langlade, Lincoln, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Pierce, Shawano, Sheboygan, Trempealeau, Waupaca, and Washington.
