ARKDALE (WAOW) – A 14-year-old Racine boy suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen while target shooting with relatives, the Adams County Sheriff's Department said Thursday.
The boy, who was shot with a handgun being handled by his 64-year-old grandfather, was reported in stable condition at a Marshfield hospital, the agency said.
“Personnel on the scene indicate the shooting was most likely accidental,” Sheriff Sam Wollin said in a statement.
The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. Wednesday near Arkdale in the Town of Strongs Prairie, the sheriff's department said.
Lt. Seth Tully said Thursday the boy's grandfather, who is also from Racine, was trying to “clear a malfunction” on a .45-caliber pistol when the boy was shot.
The identity of the boy, who was in the Arkdale area while on vacation, was not released.
