Summer tourism season winds down in Northwoods

Businesses in Minocqua were busy this Labor Day weekend as thousands of people enjoyed the holiday.

This holiday caps off what's been kind of a wacky summer weather-wise.

But business leaders said the tourism season was still successful.

If all the traffic was any indication, there were plenty of people in Minocqua celebrating Labor Day weekend.

"We're just up for our last trip with the boat for the summer," said Jeanne Willems.

Jeanne Willems was one of them. Along with friends and family, it was a goodbye to summer.

"We come up every weekend we can, even if it's a little bit cool, we like being out on the water," said Willems.

As car after car passes by and people head home from this Labor Day weekend, business owners said it's been a successful summer.

Minocqua Brewing Company managers said they were no exception.

"It's been a very good summer, it's always sad to see it come to an end," said Julie Sterzinger, Minocqua Brewing Company Manager.

Managers said they've stayed busy all weekend long.

"1,500 to 2,000 people came through our brewery," said Sterzinger.

Sterzinger said that's been the pattern most of the summer.

"Most weekends have been a blast to work, we've actually seen probably a slight increase in the number of people we've had up here this year," said Sterzinger.

Workers said the weather has caused some problems throughout the season.

"We've had some cooler days, some cooler evenings, so we are not able to use the outdoor seating we have in place," said Sterzinger.

But that hasn't stopped people from coming in.

"It's good to see that the tourists are willing to come to the Northwoods even though the weather hasn't been that cooperative," said Sterzinger.

So, as thousands of people head home, they're not just saying goodbye to the Northwoods, but to summer as well.

Minocqua Brewing Company managers plan to stay open through the winter and look forward to next summer.
