School donations address changing needs at homeless shelters

The face of homelessness appears to be changing.

"Thirty years ago our clients were primarily men. Now it is about half women and children," said Bomb Quam of Hope Center, which is The Salvation Army Shelter in Stevens Point.

Those changing clients mean shelters have changing needs. School supplies are among those.

To help meet those needs Point Insurance Agency and Community Insurance Associates donated backpacks filled with school supplies.

The Wisconsin Department of Administration says in 2012 there were 6,454 homeless children identified in the state.

That was an increase over 2011 when there were 6,293.
