The shooting inside Washington Navy Yard occurred in Building No. 197. Building No. 197 is the headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command.
The Navy doesn't build ships at this site but it is where the Naval Sea Systems Command does planning and engineering.
Sam Fellman is a Senior Writer for the Navy Times. He has been inside Building No. 197 and says you must have credentials to get into the building. Any guests must have an escort at all times. “I know the building security is very tight. This is a building that contains a lot of sensitive information on the capabilities and limitations of Navy warships,” said Freeman.
Fellman says there are about 3,000 employees in Building No. 197. Most of these workers are civilians but because this type of work requires a lot of expertise in the building of warships, many of them are veterans.
