(WAOW) -

A Marathon County woman was in downtown Washington D.C. when the shooting happened.

One day, Dawn Syring of Edgar toured the White House.

The next day, she was locked down at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Washington D.C.

“I was actually outside when everything took place. It was such a massive amount of emergency vehicles and police officers,” said Syring, who was in D.C. for a conference. She said she didn't know what was going on until she read the news online. That tragic news was multiple shooters and more than a dozen dead at the Washington Navy Yard.

The scene of the massacre was Building No. 197 inside the Washington Navy Yard.

Building No. 197 is the headquarters for the Navy Sea Systems Command.

Navy Times reporter Sam Fellman said he's been inside that building. “This is a very surprising development. NAVSEA is a place where largely civilians work. They're developing all the technical specifications for the Navy's fleet. This isn't a place where there's normally any turmoil,” said Fellman.

Dawn Syring is safe at her hotel but still in disbelief. “It's a little nerve racking because you always hear about these stories but they're never close to home. I mean especially living in Edgar, there's not a lot that usually goes on around us. So just seeing it on TV now is kind of surreal having it where we are,” said Syring.
