New scam targets central Wisconsin residents

Posted:
WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -
Wood County authorities are warning about a new way scam artists are targeting Central Wisconsin residents.

According to Wood County Crime Stoppers, the scammers pretend to be with Microsoft.

Authorities tell us the scammers alert users that their computer is infected with a virus and direct them to a website.

That website gives the scam artist control of the computer remotely.
"They go to take you to a website, by then as soon as you click on the website you already have their junk on the computer," Ryan Ulbrich, Owner of RCO Computers.
Ulbrich says that he's seeing this scam happen to more and more of his customers.
"They can log what you're doing, they can gain access to whatever you're doing, lets say you're checking into your bank account, well they may have a key logger loaded on the computer so they can watch what you're doing and actually see the password you're typing in," added Ulbrich.
Computer specialists tell Newsline 9 there is one well-known strategy to protect yourself: ask the scam artist a lot of questions.
"Say you wanna double check with a significant other, husband or wife whatever it be, a lot of the times if you say 'Hey, can I get the number and I'll call you back', they're going to kind of panic," said computer specialist Tristin Rehberg. "They're not going to have a number because they're scamming you and they're not going to want you to call them back," Rehberg added.
Microsoft issued a statement warning people not to be tricked. Company representatives say it has not and will not cold call consumers about any sort of virus.
If you think you've been a victim of this scam, you're urged to contact your bank immediately.
