Amherst students roar for Good Morning America

AMHERST (WAOW) -

Amherst High School's homecoming is Friday.

There's the big football game, but all students have been busy performing for weeks in a much different way. Instead, they've been dancing and lip syncing.

"It's a really long and extensive project we film and mix the audio for it," said Desiah Melby, the media teacher at Amherst High School.

Melby and her students helped create their second “lip dub”, a lip-sync performance that includes all 275 students of the high school.

Students danced and performed Katy Perry's newest hit throughout the halls of the school, and they loved every minute of it.

"People look at it and go oh the school's just doing a music video but it actually brings friends together," said Trenton Piotrowski, a student at Amherst High School.

They only shot the performance twice, and they produced the entire video on their own.

"It took four weeks total,” said Samantha Garske, an Amherst High school student. “Two weeks planning in our media class and two weeks practicing choreography," she said.

Students originally planned on doing Footloose. But when they heard of a contest going on, they changed their minds.

"Good Morning America and Katy Perry were having a contest to do “Roar” and so we decided to go ahead and do that instead," Melby said.

They would be entered for a grand prize concert.

"The winners of the contest, Katy Perry comes and performs a live concert for them," said Melby.

Even though schools with thousands of students submit their videos, students at Amherst think they're putting their school on the map.

"It's just awesome that a small school like this is doing something like this it's just awesome," Piotrowski said.

The students debut their lip-sync Friday night at their homecoming rally. They will know sometime next month whether they won.
