Weston discussing possible cell phone ordinance

Discussions about banning drivers from using cell phones in Weston have just begun. Thursday night, members of Weston's Public Safety Committee talked about what a ban could mean for the community.

But not everyone agrees. Some said they'd rather let the state's distracted driving laws do their job.

Right now, drivers in Weston can make a call and not think twice. But there's a new discussion on the horizon.

"Cell phone use just creates a lot of distracted driving, people are concentrating more on the conversation than driving," said Fred Schuster, Weston Public Safety Committee Member.

Schuster said a new cell phone ban ordinance may just be what the village needs.

"If we could save even one life, by banning cell phone use, isn't it worth it," said Schuster.

But some on the committee are firmly against it.

"I see more legislation like this taking away rights of people who either don't do it, or use it for emergencies, or don't abuse it," said Douglas Sutch.

The conversation comes after a number of communities in central Wisconsin started their own city ordinances.

In cities like Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield, drivers can be cited and face a fine.

Committee members like Schuster said that could mean safer streets.

"Cell phone use has caused a lot of accidents and there's even been some real public ones where somebody killed another person while texting or talking on the cell phone," said Schuster.

Other said it's an invasion of privacy.

"I just think it'd be so hard to monitor what people do on their cell phones since there's so many things you can do," said Sutch.

Now, the committee is looking for guidance from neighboring communities. They're also hoping to review more information about citations, enforcement and if the ban really works.

Committee members who want to explore a ban said they'd like to see a shared ordinance with communities like Wausau and Rib Mountain. They also said they'd like input from the community.
