UWSP Homecoming week brings economic boost

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - It's homecoming week at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point campus.
Alumni, family, and friends come into town for food, fun, and of course football.
Each day students host a different event gearing up for the big weekend. On Wednesday it was "Penny Wars."
"They add pennies to gain positive points for their team and then any silver currency or dollars is counted as negative points against their team," said Kasea Roman, sophomore at UWSP.
Sixteen teams battled it out to see who could collect the most pennies.
At the end of the penny wars, students tell Newsline 9, all of the money will go to benefit a local greenhouse project.
Homecoming week however brings thousands of people to town for the big weekend, and local businesses say it means a big boost in sales.
Polito's Pizza is one of those businesses.
"They come back for this one week of the year, yeah it gets crazy," said Phillip Johnson, manager at Polito's Pizza.
Students say Polito's Pizza is known for their macaroni and cheese pizza.
They add that you can't forget about the french fry pizza either.
"It's our special recipe I'm telling you, its our dough, our sauce, it's our awesome pizzas that we do, we have over 40 to 50 different styles of pizza," added Johnson.
Another local restaurant popular with UWSP alumni is the Hilltop Pub and Grill.
"Homecoming week, it's a big one for us, It is definitely our biggest weekend of the fall for sure," said Luke Johnson, bar manager at Hilltop Pub and Grill.
Homecoming festivities continue Thursday with the mini-Olympic games.
The homecoming parade is Saturday, followed by the football game and then the dance.
