Two athletes consumed with winning. The top two girls tennis players in the Valley, SPASH's Emily Luetschwager and D.C. Everest junior Gabby Kitchell, meeting for the conference title.
Neither player gave up a game in the tournament heading into the final. But despite the long rallies, Luestschwager defeated Kitchell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Kitchell, the two-time defending champion, was frustrated throughout much of the match, questioning line calls made by her opponent. In the beginning of the second set, she halted play to request that a coach serve as a line judge.
Luetschwager made fewer errors in route to her first conference championship.
"Probably one of the best matches of my life. I really stayed focused. Stayed mentally level. I just played my game. Moved the ball around. Only went for shots when I had to," Luetschwager said.
SPASH won the team title, with Marshfield and Wausau East tied for second.
