Packers go pink for breast cancer awareness

GREEN BAY (WAOW) -

Sunday's Green Bay Packers game had an extra meaning beyond just football.

The Packers went pink for breast cancer.

"We have two and three good friends that have been fighting breast cancer," said Dorothy Kingery of Thorp as she stood outside Lambeau Field.

She and her family chose to honor their friends with pink.

"You kind of wear it with pride. You know these people, you know something about what they're doing through," said Ed Cadwell of Chippewa Falls, Kingery's father-in-law. "Most of them are survivors. But they all wish the same thing--that they could have found it sooner. And I think that's the biggest key for fighting cancer."

That's why the American Cancer Society set up a booth outside Lambeau Field, offering information and more.

"They also can also honor or remember a loved one," said Laurie Bertrand with ACS. "It's a five dollar donation. They can fill out a ribbon. We're going to tie them to the fence."

Mary Nemec of Ashland filled out a ribbon.

"Her name was Hannah Larnson," said Nemec of the name she wrote on the ribbon. "She was my sister and I, our first babysitter and we've always kept in contact. She developed breast cancer twice, and finally it took her life."

Fans coming to the game Sunday also received pink towels, adding the color pink to the usual green and gold.

"It's a ton of pink, it's super fun," said Bertrand. "It's actually really neat to see all the different things that people come up with, to mix it with their Packer things."

Inside the stadium, 30 breast cancer survivors got to welcome the Packers onto the field. Players and refs wore some form of pink as well, uniting the crowd beyond just football.

"I think the community really rallies around this cause," said Bertrand.

And the message from family members and friends for those in the fight against breast cancer?

"Keep fighting," said Kingery.

The Packers will continue to spotlight breast cancer awareness. Later this month, some of the Packers' wives will take to the field for a pink powder puff game. It's all to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
