Each week during the high school football season, the Sports Express team will provide a list of match-ups to watch for, including our Game of the Week. Catch the highlights every Friday night on Sports Express during Newsline 9 at 10.
Marathon (7-0) at Edgar (6-1), 7PM – GAME OF THE WEEK
All eyes are on Edgar, where the Marawood conference championship will be decided. The Red Raiders will clinch the conference title with a win, keeping their unbeaten record in tact. But if Edgar, the defending conference champ, pulls off the victory, there could be a three-way tie for the Marawood crown at the end of the season. The Wildcats won last year's meeting, 33-20, in Marathon.
Wausau West (4-3) vs Wausau East (1-6), 7PM at Thom Field
The Lumberjacks won the last two "Log Game" meetings, with East clinching a spot in the playoffs with the victory in 2012. This time, West can clinch a spot in the postseason with the win at Thom Field as East looks to play the role of spoiler. The Lumberjacks have yet to win at Thom Field this year.
Kaukauna (1-6) vs. DC Everest (4-3), 7PM at Stiehm Stadium
The Evergreens are one win away from a playoff berth and would rather win in Week 8 than try to pull off a seemingly impossible upset over unbeaten Kimberly in Week 9. Kaukauna is coming off its first win of the year after beating Wausau East in Week 7.
Marshfield (5-2) vs. SPASH (4-3), 7PM at Goerke Park
The Panthers are coming off a 23-0 shutout victory over Wisconsin Rapids in Week 7 while the Tigers look to rebound from their first VFA South loss of the year. SPASH needs to win its final two games of the year in order to become playoff eligible, and an upset over Marshfield can get them halfway there.
Lakeland (2-5) at Mosinee (5-2), 7PM
The task is simple for both teams this week: win and you become playoff eligible. Lakeland and Mosinee enter Friday's game with 2-2 conference records and a victory can give either team a shot at the playoffs entering the final week. Zach Pyan is still leading the Great Northern in passing and combined with leading rusher Chris Tomski, the duo presents a dangerous threat to the Thunderbirds.
Greenwood/Granton (6-1) at Athens (6-1), 7PM
A win for the Bluejays sets up a likely battle for the Cloverwood crown when Athens faces Owen-Withee in Week 9. G2 lost to the Blackhawks earlier this season and will play the spoiler role on Friday night. A G2 win provides Owen-Withee the chance to own Cloverwood title outright if the Blackhawks can win its final two games.
Almond-Bancroft (6-1) at Rosholt (5-2), 7PM
It's a showdown for first place in the CW-10. A-B is coming off its triple overtime victory over Port Edwards while Rosholt cruised to a 42-8 win over Wild Rose in Week 7. The Hornets feature a high-powered run game with four of the conference's top 12 rushers. But Almond-Bancroft has the CW-10's best rusher in Reagan Anderson, who has 1134 yards to his name.
