Salvation Army helps families in need for the holidays

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

Christmas is right around the corner, and children are already thinking of what gifts they want under the tree. But with tough economic times, some families need help with buying gifts.

The Salvation Army of Marathon County is there to help.

"People are able to come in and apply for Christmas gifts for their children," said Lt. Melinda Tripp, who organized the sign ups.

The community center started accepting applications for their Christmas assistance program, an initiative to make sure children of Marathon County have presents to open for Christmas. Organizers say the families write down what their children want and people in the community are able to help.

"It makes all the difference in the world to these families who can't give their children anything," said Tripp.

An angel tree in the mall will be on display starting next month. People can take a tag off the tree and purchase the gift for the family. The Salvation Army then collects and donates the presents before Christmas.

Jeanette Dooley filled out an application because her family needs some help due to the economy.

"I'm working part time however hours are scarce at my job so I just need extra help," said Dooley.

Dooley has used the program for a couple of years to make Christmas more merry for her two daughters. She says they both would like new dolls and gift cards.

"If it wasn't for places like this we wouldn't have gifts under our trees most of the time," said Dooley.

The Salvation Army will be accepting applications until Friday. The gifts collected from the angel tree will be distributed the week before Christmas.
