Rhinelander students aim to break world record

Second graders at Crescent Elementary School aren't just stacking cups for fun. They're part of a worldwide movement.

"We are participating in breaking the Guinness Book of World Records with the most groups around the world stacking cups," said Jenny Prom, one of the second grade teachers.

46 countries are involved, and Crescent is one of 37,000 schools.

"We really wanted to participate because what seven or eight year old wouldn't want to break a world record," said Jesse Richter, the other second grade teacher.

The cups are in groups of three or six in all different sizes. Some of the events are timed and the scores recorded. Teachers say students have practiced for weeks.

"They've been going home and telling their parents how excited they are and they've been on their best behavior the past couple of days because they know this day was coming," said Richter.

Teachers say the cup stacking promotes coordination, speed and using different parts of the body.

"They're practicing using both hands which will help them in sports and music and sequencing and pattern for math and reading," said Prom.

But these students are trying not to think too much about it, they just do it.

"I got challenged but it was really hard but actually pretty fun," said Alexia Robinson, one of the second graders who participated.

They hope their efforts will ultimately end up in a world record.

The record to break is half a million people around the world. The students and teachers of the class want to do the activity again next year.
