Gun deer season opens in one week. Many hunters were out and about Friday night making final preparations. Some businesses are also gearing up for the season.
Zillman Meat Market is in its 53rd deer season and store employees say this time of year is the busiest.
"We do slim jims, jerky, summer sausage, venison, bacon, polish, a little bit of everything," said Steven Roeder, a butcher at Zillman's.
A lucky bow hunter stopped by Zillman's to pick up his favorite snack.
"I am picking up venison sausage, little sticks, and they are awesome," said Paul Nievinski of Mosinee.
But for many hunters, a lot of work remains before they can enjoy a deer dinner.
"Making sure the shooting lanes are cleared, just preparation, putting tree stands up. It's a lot of work," said Deanor Cholski of Muskego.
He has already spent many weekends with his brother preparing for the big gun deer hunt.
"I'm looking for that trophy though, but first and foremost, it's dinner on the table," said Cholski.
It's also a family affair for 12 year old Samuel Thompson and his dad.
"That's one of the best parts about hunting, is spending the time together," said David Thompson of Waukesha.
But a lot of that time is spent working.
"Looking to see where we're seeing deer, and where's a good place to set up, and then we're also going to go to the rifle range this weekend, make sure his rifle is hitting well," said Thompson.
Samuel says it's all worth it.
"It's like amazing when you're seeing the deer and it's coming closer and it doesn't know that you're there," said Samuel.
Employees at Zillman Meat Market are also hoping for success in the woods so they can get treats on hunters' tables.
"After the deer come in, that's when the real work starts," says Roeder.
Gun deer season in Wisconsin runs from November 23rd until December 1st.
