WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel is back in the office after being hospitalized for a serious illness.
"I had shingles that settled in the spinal column and it resulted in meningitis and encephalitis. It caused inflammation in the brain and extreme pain. I felt like my head was going to explode," said Hardel.
Hardel, who spent time in the hospital, has returned to work and plans to put in four or five hours a day this week.
"It felt so overwhelming and it was wonderful to have the support of my family, co-workers and the community," said Hardel on his recovery.
He says he still suffers from fatigue but he feels stronger every day.
