WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) - The Wood County man convicted of killing his former girlfriend has been sentenced to life in prison with the chance of extended supervision in 40 years.
Gabriel Luis Campos, 22, was sentenced Tuesday in Wood County Circuit Court.
Campos was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide for killing 18-year-old Maisie McCullough of Marshfield in September 2012. According to a police, Campos is the father of McCullough's then-two-year-old son.
During sentencing, a tearful father addressed a packed courtroom.
"It's been hard, it's been hard for everybody," said George McCullough, Maisie's father. "Maisie was just a special, special gal. She was going places. It's going to take a long time for the healing process."
Before the judge handed down the sentence, Campos had something to say.
"I took the life of a really good person in a brutal and senseless way. I take full responsibility for my actions and I regret it everyday. I am truly sorry," said Campos.
Marshfield Police say McCullough was found dead in a home in the 1300 Block of E. Blodgett Street in Marshfield shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2012.
