UPDATE: 29-year-old driver hits hospital wall

A 29-year-old Wisconsin Rapids driver suffered a medical condition, triggering the crash through a wall at Riverview Hospital that temporarily shut down its emergency room, Police Chief Kurt Heuer said Monday.

James Pecher was driving the vehicle when the crash occurred Saturday afternoon, Heuer said.

No details regarding Pecher's medical condition were immediately released.

The speed limit on the Riverview Expressway where Pecher was eastbound before the crash is about 45 mph, the police chief said.

Police said four people in the hospital suffered minor injuries when Pecher's sport utility vehicle plowed through a wall so forcefully that its engine compartment and front seat area were completely inside the hospital.

Pecher was taken to another hospital for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Riverview Hospital officials say the emergency room in Wisconsin Rapids is now open and accepting patients again.

Wisconsin Rapids Police Department officials say a car hit the building Saturday afternoon, causing structural damage. Lt. Brian Krzykowski tells Newsline 9 the male driver was transported to another hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Officials say the crash may have been caused by medical issues.

Authorities say four people inside the hospital also had minor injuries. They say the crash may be medically related.

"As of right now, we're not releasing the name of the driver. The incident is still under investigation. Probably be into the weekend and next week until we get our answer as to what caused the accident," said Wisconsin Rapids Police Department Lt. Brian Krzykowski.
