Ritchay records double-double as Pointers extend unbeaten start

Joe Ritchay recorded his first career double-double to lead the top-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 65-48 conference win over visiting UW-River Falls on Saturday night at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.

Ritchay tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win for the Pointers (16-0, 7-0 WIAC), who extended their best-ever start to a season. The junior shot 6-for-7 from the field in the game and scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half. Eight of his 12 boards came after the break.

Ben Gresmer, Grant Erickson and Ollie White each scored nine points for UW-River Falls (6-10, 1-6 WIAC), who lost its fourth straight game. After making their first three three-pointers of the game, the Falcons made just three of their final 13 attempts from behind the arc.

After a close opening seven minutes to the game, the Pointers went on an 11-3 run to take a 26-16 lead midway through the first half. Clayton Heuer, who scored 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, had six points during the run.

The Falcons then scored five straight points to get back within five but UWSP responded with an 11-2 of its own. Ritchay and Alex Richard combined to score nine of the 11 points in the run that lasted just over four minutes.

The 11-2 run culminated in a 37-23 lead for the Pointers, their largest of the opening half. Richard scored all seven of his points before the break, as UW-Stevens Point took a 40-27 lead into halftime after shooting 51.6 percent from the floor.

The Pointers held a double-digit lead for the entire second half and led by as many as 18 down the stretch. The closest the Falcons got in the second half was 11 after Jay Sewer opened the half with a layup.

UW-Stevens Point shot 48.1 percent from the field in the game but just 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from behind the arc. The Pointers outrebounded the Falcons 36-24 in the game, led by Ritchay's dozen rebounds, and had 12 offensive boards in the game.

UWSP outscored UWRF 22-10 in the paint in the first half and 36-22 in the game. The Pointers also held advantage in second chance points, 18-6, and bench points, 18-8.

UW-Stevens Point travels to UW-Platteville (11-5, 6-1 WIAC) on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game between the top two teams in the conference.
