Wausau mall's new manager has work cut out for him

The Wausau Center Mall has a new manager just as the mall undergoes major changes.

Anchor store JCPenney is getting ready to move out in May. It's one of five locations in Wisconsin closing.

Gap and Hollister have already left the mall, as has restaurant "Casual Joe's" in the food court.

It's quite a time for the mall's new manager, Shawn Weiss, who started his job just a few weeks ago.

"Every day is a new challenge," said Weiss. "I'm very excited to be here in Wausau."

And his work is cut out for him—finding new tenants to replace Gap and Hollister and figuring out what to do with the JCPenney building.

"We have a dedicated team going through a list of retailers," said Weiss. He wouldn't give any specifics, but he says it could be a store similar to JCPenney or something else.

"Would you ever consider a movie theater?" asked Newsline 9's Daniel Woodruff.

"That has been discussed," said Weiss. "It's not out of the question. We are considering all options."

The mall even has a poll on its website where you can vote for your dream store.

"We want your opinion," said Weiss. "It helps us target a specific retailers and to go after that."

Aside from all this, the mall is getting ready to welcome one more store and replace another.

"Biggby Coffee will be opening up soon, and then OPA! will be opening up in the food court," said Weiss.

Weiss promises to work hard in his new job to make sure this downtown Wausau shopping center is strong. He said he's especially interested in connecting with anyone who owns a business or is thinking of starting one. You can contact him here.
