Winter Fest brings large crowds to downtown Wausau

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The 400 Block in downtown Wausau turned into a winter wonderland Saturday, as hundreds of people came to enjoy their favorite parts of Winter Fest.

"We came out to enjoy the festivities, it's not something you can do outside at home," said Natalie Altenhofen of Marathon.

"Definitely the little ice sculptures on the side,” said Rachel Rentmeester of Kronenwetter. “The girls love seeing the chain saws on the ice."

From sled dogs on the west side, a mac and cheese contest at the Wausau Elks Lodge and of course the big snow slide on the 400 Block -- there was something for everyone.

"We want really the camaraderie of downtown,” said Kasey Taube, the marketing and events coordinator. “We want people to get into the stores downtown, and we also just want people to get out during the winter time."

Organizers says dozens of community groups are involved, but they say they couldn't do it without the help of local businesses. In return, people are flooding their stores.

"Just getting everyone involved and showing them downtown, because a lot of people don't come down here and if they want to there's something to do," said Taube.

"We don't really come downtown very often,” said Rentmeester. “If something draws us downtown, then we might find somewhere different to go to lunch or stop at a store that we normally wouldn't do."

Despite the temperatures, people at Winter Fest say it gives them a day of fun and a great reason to celebrate the season.

"I think it's just nice to see people who have cabin fever can get out and enjoy a sunny day even though it's cold," said Altenhofen.
