RHINELANDER (WAOW) - A former Oneida County medical examiner was sentenced to a year in jail Monday for taking tissue from dead people to train her cadaver dog, according to online court records.

Traci England, 46, was convicted of two felony counts of misconduct in office in a plea deal that dismissed other charges, including a similar case in Forest County, Oneida County online court records said. She was charged two years ago.

Prosecutors said England told police that she took a human bone to train one of her dogs to search for cadavers.

Circuit Judge Leon Stenz ordered England to begin serving the jail term on Friday with work privileges, online court records said. The judge also sentenced England to perform a total 300 hours of community service in Oneida and Forest counties, write apology letters to the families of the victims and own no animal that would be used for cadaver purposes during three years of probation.

Her attorney has said England had an "altruistic, innocent intent" in her actions.

England resigned as medical examiner shortly after the charges were filed.
