Posted:
At least eleven temperature records were tied or broken early Friday morning compliments of unseasonably cold air over central and eastern Wisconsin.

According to the National Weather Service office in Green Bay, daily low temperature records were matched or broken in Antigo, Green Bay, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Merrill, Oshkosh, Rhinelander, Stevens Point, Sturgeon Bay, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids.

The oldest temperature record broken had stood since 1884. That's when Manitowoc's previous record low for the date was -14 degrees. Early Friday morning the temperature was recorded at -15 degrees, beating the 130-year-old record by one degree.

Very cold air was widespread across the region Friday morning, but the coldest temperature was observed at Antigo in Langlade Co. That's where the air temperature crashed to -30 degrees early Friday morning. That smashed the previous record low temperature for the date of -17 degrees. That record had stood since 2009.

Additional temperature records broken Friday morning include readings at Merrill, which cooled to -29 degrees breaking the previous record of -19 degrees in 1963. Rhinelander began Friday morning at -25 degrees, besting the earlier record of -22 degrees from 2009.

Communities in Wood and Portage Counties were broken in Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids. Stevens Point cooled to -27 degrees Friday morning, demolishing the previous record low of -12 degrees that had stood since 1917. Wisconsin Rapids' morning low of -20 degrees set a new record beating the previous recording-holding temperature of -18 degrees set in 1922.

Wausau also hit a new record low temperature on Friday morning when it cooled to -23 degrees. That set a new record low for the date beating the previous marker of -21 degrees last observed in 1962.
