High school students look at politics up close

At a time when many voters have become cynical about politics, some area high school students have set their sights on learning more about the political process.

As part of their classroom activities, students from schools across Marathon County took part in mock state political conventions. Hundreds of students met at UWMC in Wausau for the Kids Voting USA political conventions.

Teachers say the project encourages students to make informed choices.

At the event, each party determined its platform and nominated its top gubernatorial candidates. Debates then took place.

Newsline 9's Melissa Langbehn was one of the panelists asking questions.

Winners from each party took home a $500 scholarship and an iPad.

The Kids Voting project is part of nationwide non-partisan network of community volunteers.
