Counterfeit money showing up in Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - Stevens Point police are warning area businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money.

Detective Kent Lepak said fake $5 and $20 bills, bearing a "2009 series note," were recovered last week from a deposit at a local downtown tavern, and a $10 bill, also a 2009 series note, was recovered in mid-February from a McDonalds in Stevens Point.

A fake $20 bill, with a 2006 series note, was found last week in a deposit from a Subway restaurant, he said.

The $20 bill recovered from the tavern had dark portions on its bottom edge as if the bill was cut somewhat unevenly from a full sheet of fake bills and the dark edge was from another bill that was on the full sheet, he said.

"The fake $5 had a burned top right corner as if someone tried to age the bill," Lepak said.

Both bills had indications that an ink jet printer was used for printing, the detective said.
