Marathon County flooding concerns

Posted:
Marathon County leaders say the county is safe from flood threats, for now. Wausau Public Works Superintendent Ric Mohlenitzky says he's thankful for the slow thaw this spring.

"We've been quite lucky," said Mohlenitzky. "A couple weeks ago, we were real concerned that the snow was going to disappear all at once."

Although the city isn't currently facing flood danger, Mohelnitzky says the city still needs to be prepared.

"We're prepping for the warm weather this weekend," he said. "So when the water does come, it's got some place to go and it can get to the river where it's supposed to go."

Crews are working to open nearly a hundred storm drains. Workers are clearing debris and removing ice.

"If [a big thaw] does come then that isn't blocking it," said Mohelnitzky.

Members of the American Red Cross are encouraging people to be prepared by downloading its new flood app.

"You have information right at your fingertips," said Wendy Savage, an American Red Cross Community Chapter Executive. "There's also function on there, if there is an incident you can just tap a button and let people know you are safe."

Marathon County Emergency Management Director Steve Hagman says there are certain areas in the county that are more susceptible to flooding than others:
