Seidl salvages split for second-ranked Pointers against UW-La Crosse

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) threw his second shutout of the season to lead the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team to a 6-0 win in game two of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader against UW-La Crosse after the Eagles won game one 11-6 on Monday afternoon at University Field.

UW-La Crosse (9-9, 3-3 WIAC) scored seven runs off UW-Stevens Point (15-2, 5-1) starter JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) in the first two innings to build a 7-0 lead and held on for an 11-6 win to give the Pointers their first conference loss of the season.

In the top of the first, the first five Eagles batters reached base, including a two-run single by Alex Cordova to start the scoring. UWL also added runs on a fielder's choice and groundout to put four runs on the board in the first.

The first four UW-La Crosse batters all reached in the second. Shane Adler started the inning with a double, Taylor Kohlwey followed with a single but Jimmy Coady(La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) threw out Adler at the plate. After a hit batter, Cole Cefalu homered to right field to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

UW-Stevens Point started to rally in the second, scoring four times. With the bases loaded and two outs, Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) singled to left, scoring two. Two batters later with the bases still loaded, Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) knocked in two more with a single to center.

Feyereisen settled down after the first two innings and went seven innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned, with six strikeouts. Ben Cejka also clamped down after the second and went the distance for the Eagles. Cejka gave up six runs, five earned, and struck out 14 with no walks.

UW-La Crosse added two in the seventh and two in the ninth, sandwiched around Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon)'s fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center in the eighth. The Eagles' top four hitters combined to go 8-for-16 with 10 runs scored and seven RBI. Cordova and Cefalu each scored twice and drove in three runs.

Seidl fanned 11 hitters in a five-hit shutout to improve to 4-0 this season. The Eagles biggest scoring threat came in the top of the fourth with runners on the corners and no outs but Seidl escaped.

The Pointers gave Seidl a run in the third on a single by Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt), scoring Rose and the score remained 1-0 until the seventh. UW-La Crosse starter Troy Kenkel, pitched seven innings, nearly matched Seidl's scoreless innings to keep the Eagles close.

Pinch hitter Bryton Guckenberg (Trego, MT/Lincoln County) drove in Hanke with a groundout in the seventh to double UWSP's lead.

UW-Stevens Point then tacked on four in the ninth. Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) started the inning with a single and went to third on Kranz's double. McHugh then singled, scoring Spetz. Three batters later after an intentional walk to Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette), Hanke laced a two-run single to center. The final run came on a sacrifice bunt by Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West), the next batter.

McHugh and Kranz each had three hits for the Pointers, who tallied 10 hits.

UW-Stevens Point hosts St. Norbert in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9 at noon and 2 p.m.
