Jefferson Award: Dorothy Duberstein
WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A Kronenwetter woman is named a Jefferson Award winner for her volunteer efforts.
Dorothy Duberstein, 89, has made thousands of quilts.
"I have made 5,445 since 1964, when I started keeping track," said Duberstein.
She has made quilts for family and friends and many people she doesn't even know.
"When I heard about the homeless shelter I decided to make quilts that were big enough so that if they were sitting on a park bench they could wrap it around themselves so they could stay warm," explained Duberstein.
She says she enjoys putting the quilts together and knowing that the blanket will keep someone warm.
The Jefferson Awards are given out monthly to someone in the Newsline 9 viewing area in recognition of their efforts to help others.
It is a national service award which began began in 1972.
