Tax deadline brings relief to many

WAUSAU (WAOW) - April 15 is one of the more unpopular days of the year, and one of the more stressful ones for accountants.

Tuesday was a busy day for accountants, but some say they have been dealing with the mad rush since January.

They say the difference is that Tuesday was finally the light at the end of the tunnel.

For taxpayers, the deadline passing means it's time to breathe a sigh of relief.

"I feel good that I'm done with taxes," said Tarundeep Kaur of Wausau. "It's the last day and I wanted to make it here on time, so it's a relief."

Relief might be an understatement for some accountants.

"It's over, it's done," said Curt Day, a C.P.A. for Wausau Tax and Accounting. "We get to get back to a life so everyone's in a little bit better mood."

Some compare this deadline day to the last day of school.

"I personally have worked every day since January 2," Day said. "This is 104 straight days and I average over 80 hours a week."

He says the rush of clients this time of year is nothing new.

"I've been doing it for 20 years so yeah, we're used to it and that's what our life is like for these three months," said Day.

He says April 15 is always the same, too.

"People calling up, coming out of the woodwork, saying 'hey, I need to get in and see you,'" Day said.

Some taxpayers headed to the post office to send off their returns.

"We're kind of habitual as far as waiting till the last minute because we usually are paying in," said Becky Roloff of Wausau.

The post office closed a few minutes before Roloff arrived.

"I guess we're just running late today," she said.

Roloff says she remembers when it would stay open until midnight.

"I was expecting that there'd be a lot of people here and that there'd be a big line because in other years, usually that's been the case," Roloff said.

But, she still dropped her envelope in the mailbox and said goodbye to another tax season.
