Wausau woman out thousands of dollars in scam

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wausau police say a 91-year old woman is out thousands of dollars as the result of a scam.

Wausau police say they have been alerted to a scam by postal inspectors in Atlanta, Georgia.

The scam involves a fake prize requiring people to send money to claim it.

"They noticed suspicious activity. It turned out the woman was mailing money to the scam artists. They had apparently told her she won a monetary award and then told her she needed to pay the taxes on those winnings," said Patrol Lt. Mark Pankow.

According to a police report, a 91-year-old Wausau woman fell victim to the scam and is out more than $10,000.

"It is unfortunate. But they prey on the elderly and those who don't know they are being scammed," said Pankow.

If you believe this scam is targeting you, contact police.
