Fire burns 34 acres in Wood County

WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) - A fire in the Township of Cary burned across 34 acres, according to Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor.

Minor says the department received a report of a fire at 1:55 p.m. Saturday on land northwest of Pittsville near the Wood and Clark County border.

Pittsville, Rock, and Vesper fire departments responded to the scene. The DNR was also on scene, using a patrol plane to spot the fire.

Officials say the fire traveled through marshland and across fields. They say the fire burned through three properties and into a pine plantation. Fire officials say the fire burned across the floor of the plantation but did not burn pine.

Chief Minor says the fire started after debris traveled from a burn barrel.

Officials say no injuries were reported. No structures were damaged in the fire.

The fire chief says crews returned from the scene around 5 p.m. Saturday.

He urged people to pay attention to the weather when burning and avoid burning until after significant rainfall and greening.
