Warmer weather means its time to watch out for ticks

WAUSAU ( WAOW) - Warmer temperatures mean it's time to watch out for ticks. Experts say this warmer, damp weather is just what they like.

But, there are are ways to keep yourself safe. Experts say avoiding wooded and brushy areas can make you less of a target for ticks. If you are headed outside, experts recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants. They say the best thing to do is keep the ticks on the outside of your clothes so you can't get bit.

For your pets, veterinarians say your dog or cat has a higher chance of getting ticks and getting sick that you do. The best way to prevent that is a repellent.

"They're definitely out there,” said VCA Companion Care veterinarian Brandy Kosterman. “About the time the maple syrup starts to run, when the weather maybe gets nice, they're already out there waiting to jump on a pet. So, it's good to start your prevention earlier than you think you need to. Most of the time we recommend starting in March or February and going all the way until the snow is on the ground."

Kosterman says another good preventative tip to keep your pet safe is to do a tick check when they come inside from a walk.
