WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Wausau is one step closer to forcing escort services to be licensed.
The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee voted for that rule unanimously Monday.
Committee members say it will help crack down on prostitutes who advertise online. If this passes the full city council, escort services would have to fill out an application, pay a fee, and undergo fingerprinting and background checks.
Weston and Schofield have already passed similar escort laws.
"The intent really is to reduce that type of online activity and basically create a hostile environment for it in the Wausau Area and in the surrounding communities that have already passed it, it's sort of a regional effort and we're the third one now to partake in that effort," said Public Health & Safety Committee Member, Lisa Rasmussen.
"If we can have the same ordinance across the metro area it just makes it a louder statement to people that we are not going to tolerate this type of activity," said Wausau Police Captain. Ben Liven.Wassail committee members say an escort service license would cost $500. The penalty for not being licensed would be $2,000.
This issue heads to the full city council in May.
