No decision reached on Wausau mall's rent payment

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Wausau City Council has decided not to do anything right now about giving the Wausau Center mall a break on rent.

On Tuesday, council members voted to send the idea back to committee.

It was not a close vote. At 9 to 1, most of the council agreed that they just didn't have enough information to make a decision.

The plan was to charge the mall just one dollar for a year's rent.

Members had said it would give the mall's parent company a chance to attract a store to replace JC Penney, which closes next month.

But Tuesday, they said they didn't know enough about running a retail mall to make a decision with such a financial impact.

They said the mall's owner needs to work more with the city.

"We need them to come to the table and we also need to look at what information they are providing us," said Councilman David Oberbeck. "Romey made a good comment. It's the Packers versus Stevens Point. We need to be at that national table just as everyone else is in looking at their downtowns."

During the discussion, some council members said giving the mall a break on rent would "prolong the longevity" of the mall.

The mall's owner did not return Newsline 9's calls. The mall manager also said he had no comment.
