Wausau's 2nd annual March for Equality announced

WAUSAU (WAOW) – The 2nd Annual March for Equality has been announced for this summer, one year after controversy led to the creation of the inaugural event.

The march is scheduled for June 21 and will begin at noon in Marathon Park in Wausau.

“After a highly successful inaugural march, we will once again walk to demonstrate solidarity in the movement for equal rights for citizens for all gender identities and sexual orientations,” organizers said in a news release.

Organizers put the event together last year after questions were raised about another gay pride event. A man supposedly named Daxx Bouvier organized it, but Newsline 9 found no evidence Bouvier exists. The original event was canceled and organizers of the March for Equality said something had to be done.

"We wanted to be sure that we had a local presence that was displaying a positive image that really represented Wausau and our community," said organizer Shannon Thomas in an interview with Newsline 9.

Several hundred people turned out for last year's event. Organizers say they're expecting even more this year.

After the march, organizers say a picnic style lunch will be held in the 400 Block from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.
