WIS 29 construction to begin in Rib Mountain

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - A central Wisconsin highway is about to get a makeover.

In early May, crews will start working on Wisconsin 29 between Rib Mountain and Rothschild. They'll also improve other roads.

Transportation officials say the time for repairs is now.

"The pavement is getting to the point where it's beyond its useful life and we need to do some extensive replacement of the pavement," said Matt Bronson, the project development chief for WisDOT.

The project costs $19 million, but the impact goes beyond just financial.

"Throughout this summer and the next couple summers, we're going to have lane closures on Highway 29," Bronson said. "You can expect delays as part of that during peak travel periods."

That includes the Sunrise Drive overpass in Rib Mountain.

"The Sunrise Drive overpass will be closed to traffic for a couple months while we do work on the Sunrise Drive bridge so that will impact some of the local traffic that uses that bridge," said Bronson.

Scott Turner, Rib Mountain's street superintendent, estimates drivers will be forced to take about a 15 minute detour during that time, but he says there will be benefits.

"There will be new pavement marking and a new beam guard, a guard rail on each side of the bridge so there are those safety enhancements," Turner said.

Safety is the key word. That's what project managers say the construction is about.

"[It will] reduce the potholes we need to have out there [for] ultimately a safe drive, a smooth drive for drivers."
