Wausau police explain why citations were issued in Nerf gun fight

Posted:
WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The Wausau Police Department is releasing more information about a Nerf gun fight that's causing controversy.

Six Wausau West High School seniors were issued disorderly conduct citations.

"The basis for this decision was the disruption caused to the neighborhood, not the use of Nerf guns. This incident happened on Stevens Drive, in a residential neighborhood, on the side of the roadway. There was enough disruption to cause a neighbor’s attention to be drawn to see what was happening," according to a news release from the police department.

But some parents say police took things too far in handing out the citations.

The school has also placed some students on athletic probation. This isn't the first time the Wausau school district has dealt with this game.

Parents received a letter about it last week, warning them any complaints will "be investigated and handled accordingly."

"It tends to evolve at times, and I think that's what we're dealing with,” said Jeff Lindell, the district's director of pupil services. “We definitely had some concerns last year, but I think the game just keeps evolving."

According to the school district, none of the students involved will be suspended.

"We will continue to investigate this incident by reading police reports, looking at squad video, speaking to officers involved, and listening to radio transmissions to evaluate our response," according the the news release from Wausau Police.
