Crews respond to business fire in Merrill

Posted:
MERRILL (WAOW) - Officials are trying to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed about half of a Lincoln County business.

The fire broke out at Yorde Tool and Machining in Merrill around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

"We had heavy black smoke coming from the back of the building," said Captain Mike Drury of the Merrill Fire Department.

Drury says the damage to building could have been worse.

He says a fire wall saved the front half of the building, where the machine shop is located.

"Benefited us tremendously with our tactics," said Drury. "We cut it off at the storage unit and the back side."

He says the fire destroyed pontoon boats and campers.

The fire captain says that the roof collapsed when crews were trying to put out the fire. Heavy machinery crews came later to take down what was left of the roof so crews could go back into the building and eliminate any hot spots that were remaining.

"The rest of the building has been saved," said Drury. "Everything inside the machinery nothing has been touched."

The store owner did not want to comment.

Officials say no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
