UPDATE: Wausau PD reach agreement with students in nerf wars case

WAUSAU (WAOW) - WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Wausau Police have decided to drop citations given to Wausau West High School students, after reaching an agreement, Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel announced at a press conference Tuesday.

As part of the agreement, the students will work with officers to create a PSA to inform other students about the dangers of the nerf wars game, Hardel said.

Last Wednesday night, a 911 call to Wausau police reported someone with guns near Wausau West. Police arrived at Stevens Drive on high alert, but quickly learned several students had Nerf guns.

Students say the guns are part of a game called Nerf wars. Police say the students cooperated with officers, but six received disorderly conduct citations with a fine of $240.

"They said they weren't intending to do anything wrong,” said Steckbauer. “But they understood why things happened the way they did."

Wausau West's principal says the students weren't going to be suspended.

"What the students described was an activity's code violation," said Steckbauer.

He says they could have faced athletic probation and other penalties.

"Without the citations, there isn't any violations of the activities code," said Steckbauer.

The principal says this isn't the first time Wausau West has dealt with a Nerf war.

"I believe this is the third year," said Steckbauer.

He hopes students will learn from the gun incident.

"Certainly want them to have fun,” said Steckbauer. “But I don't want them to get themselves in a spot that they didn't intend to go."

A place, he says, the students hopefully don't have to go again.
