Athlete of the Week: Austin Schulfer, SPASH baseball

SPASH senior Austin Schulfer was fully aware that no one had been on base throughout his start last Tuesday, but he says he wasn't at all nervous.

“I did look at the scoreboard, I'm not going to lie,” Schulfer said with a smile. “But I just knew that I had to stay focused on my pitches and I knew that I had good stuff that day.”

It was a crucial game for the Wisconsin Valley standings. SPASH was locked in a scoreless tie with D.C Everest until the bottom of the sixth inning. That was when the fourth-ranked Panthers manufactured a run, and Schulfer finished off the win by completing the no-no in the seventh.

"There was really a lot to focus on other than the no-hitter,” SPASH head baseball coach Kraig Terpstra said. “But, once he struck that last guy out, the magnitude of it became clear."

That magnitude could have been even greater. Schulfer was one SPASH error away from throwing a perfect game.

This outing was no fluke for the right-hander, who is committed to play at UW-Milwaukee next season.

“He's extremely enthusiastic about baseball,” Terpstra said. “He's in his favorite spot when he's on the mound and he's in his second favorite spot when he's playing other positions.”

In part, Schulfer credits his success and his love of the game to rest of the SPASH pitching staff, which is one of the top rotations in the state.

“I think if it was just one of us, we wouldn't really excel,” Schulfer said. “But having all of us, we can all help each other out and really push each other to be our best.”

SPASH is currently 7-2, and ranked fourth in Division 1.
