Green flag will drop on State Park Speedway season Saturday

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - The 2014 State Park Speedway season starts this Saturday, May 17th with an ARCA Midwest Tour stop.  The season preview includes a feature on four-time State Park Speedway Late Models points champion Mark Mackesy. We also have a feature on owner and promoter Scott Wimmer. And I spoke with PA announcers Curt Keene and Andrew Bartelt, aka Black Bart.

Click on the attached video to see the season preview.

Last year Mark Mackesy won his fourth C-Tech Super Late Model Points Championship. All have come since 2008.

His 41 all-time feature wins rank third behind only Dick Trickle and Tom Reffner.

During his career. Mackesy has won all three of State Park Speedway's signature events. Last year he won the Flip Merwin Memorial for the second time. A victory that is especially meaningful because he grew up with Flip.

He also won the Larry Detjens Memorial in 1999, 2006 and 2012. The Detjens name is close to him. He's married to Larry's daughter Margo.

Scott Wimmer has extensive experience racing tracks in Wisconsin as well as the Nationwide and Cup series. He and his father Ron own State Park Speedway.

A big priority back in 2009 was bringing back the Larry Detjens and Flip Merwin races.

Ron and Scott were honored by as the Northern region's top promoter and took 3rd nationally in that category.

It's been a year since Dick Trickle passed away. A memorial is being built in his hometown of Rudolph. State Park Speedway is contributing to the project.

Keene and Bartelt are going into their fifth season as a the PA announcing team at State Park Speedway. In our conversation we touch on why they work so well together, why they think the racing is so good in this area and how they provide some entertainment, as well as information on race nights.
