WAUSAU (WAOW) - Hundreds of motorcyclists hit the road in Wausau for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Harley Davidson Ride.

Riders like Bill McKeever of Kronenwetter remember the first time he rode his Harley motorcycle.

"It might have started out when I thought I was at the right age to do things, and when my wife told me I couldn't do it, it made me want to get one more," said McKeever.

He's been riding across the country for nine years. He says it's hard to describe the feeling of starting the engine and hitting the road.

"It gives you a feeling of freedom, and you look in the mirror and you've got all your friends behind you, and you get to experience so many different things and meet so many different people," said McKeever.

For the past five years, McKeever has also been riding his Harley for a good cause in the MDA ride.

"This group of people, it gives you the opportunities to be a part of helping people,” said McKeever. “It's awesome."

The MDA of Marathon County helps 50 families in the are affected by muscular dystrophy. Organizers say the support of these riders is what makes it such a success.

"The feeling they get is something you can't describe,” said Krystal Westfahl, the MDA events coordinator. “They are helping families they are helping kids in the local communities."

These riders couldn't agree more.

"I like helping the community as much as I can, and when I get to help the community and do something I really enjoy like riding motorcycles with friends, it's just a great match," said McKeever.

Food and live music are at the Harley Davidson Store in Rothschild after the ride, where it ends. Organizers say they hope to raise $40,000 from the event.
