D.C. Everest earns a Division 1 silver ball

MILWAUKEE (WAOW) -

After a thrilling comeback win Friday night, the magic ran out for D.C. Everest on Saturday. The Evergreens gave up an early goal and fell 1-0 to Divine Savior Holy Angels in the Division 4 state title game.

Still though, especially after their win in the semifinal, the Evergreens say they never really felt like they were out of the championship game.

"I never hit the panic button all game," said head coach Lucas Kollross. "We switched our formation up in the second half, and obviously it worked again. We got numerous shots on goal in the second half. I think we out shot them 11-7 but unfortunately our shots just weren't strong enough."

"We dropped our heads a bit, but after last night I think we could have came back from anything in any game against any team," said senior Mali Theiss. "I didn't doubt our team at all. I mean, we had chances the whole game so I thought we could come back and do it."

Even though the Evergreens fell short of their ultimate goal, they're still bringing a silver ball back to show for their magnificent season.

"This was a big step for our program. Not only to get down to state but to come home with a ball,'' raved Kollross. "That's huge for our program, great for our school. And we had a young team. You know we have four seniors who really laid it all out on the line and did a lot for this program here, but I know we have a lot of younger players here who are anxious again to try and do this again next year."

Although D.C. Everest's season ends in defeat, the program did make progress this year with its first ever state tournament appearance, and with only four seniors graduating, more good things should be in store for the future.
